Built in 1896, St. Lawrence the Martyr Roman Catholic Church was located on the southeast corner of Main Street and Handsome Avenue, Sayville. The site of this church is now the school yard. The church and rectory were destroyed by fire on April 25, 1967. A new church was then built a little way to the west, on the southwest corner of Main Street and Handsome Avenue. The parochial school, now called Prince of Peace Regional School, was built in 1922.
