John P. G. Bates is shown here in his garden.  His home was on the corner of Cherry Avenue and Montauk Highway in West Sayville and was originally built by William Greene in the late 18th century.  George Washington stopped for tea and a rest at the house during his tour of Long Island in 1790.  Mr. Bates served on the Sayville Library board for fifteen years (1953-1968) and the library's meeting room is named in his honor.
