The structure housing the Sayville Library from 1924 through 1965
was the former Reuben Edwards homestead and was purchased by the library in 1923
from Edwards' daughter, Mrs. Charles R. Brown, for $10,000. The house was
demolished in 1965 to make way for a larger library and Sayville Library
continues to occupy the site today. This photograph of the Sayville
Library appeared in the October 28, 1938 issue of the Suffolk County News,
accompanying an article marking the 25th anniversary of the Sayville Village
Improvement Society. The caption read: "The Sayville Public Library,
one of the first and important projects sponsored by the Sayville Village
Improvement Society. For a number of years before the local school
district voted an appropriation for that purpose, the women raised the money and
had the responsibility of that institution."
