Event Details
Hike the site of Radio Central where the first transatlantic wireless message was sent overseas in 1921. The site has interesting Long Island (& worldwide) history that is largely forgotten. We will see the concrete footings left from the tall towers that once stood on the property & the few remaining towers laying on the forest floor. The hike is flat and a little over 2 miles long.
We will meet on Rocky Point Yaphank Road (route 21) about 1.5 miles north of Whiskey Road, or 1.1 miles south of 25A. Look for two signs: 1 small sign that says 'Rocky Point Natural Resource Management Area' and a large sign next to it with a wooden border and photos on it that says 'RCA Radio Communications Inc. 1921-1975.' Pull over and park on the side of the road here.
Fee: $3 check, money order or credit/debit card
